It's great that virtual volunteering has been mainstream for so long, and it's great to see so many great new programs popping up. As someone that's been researching the practice and promoting it since the mid-1990s, it's particularly satisfying.
But a virtual volunteering program to help a particularly vulnerable group got my attention because there's nothing in place regarding safety for online volunteers or clients. And the organizers were shocked when I brought it to their attention - they'd never thought about it, because they hadn't realized that basic volunteer management principles still apply online. IMO, there are too many initiatives that are focused on creating a really complex, feature-rich web site for volunteers to use to sign up and contribute their time and skills, but not thinking about risk management – protecting clients and volunteers.
So I wrote a blog about risk management that organizations running virtual volunteering programs really need to consider. Hope others find it helpful.
